The pianist Charles Spencer was born in Yorkshire/England. At first he studied under Max Pirani at the Royal Academy of Music in London and won numerous prices at the time – including a scholarship that enabled him to pursue his studies in Vienna under Walter Fleischmann, Noel Flores and Robert Schollum. Furthermore, he attended master classes under Vlado Perlemuter and Geoffrey Parsons. He graduated with honors from the University of Music and Perfomring Arts Vienna and received the advancement award for artistic achievements of the Austrian Government.
Prof. Spencer is one of the most sought-after piano accompanists worldwide who regularly collaborates with many of the world’s most renowned singers such as Bernarda Fink, Elina Garanča, Gundula Janowitz, Vesselina Kasarova, Marjana Lipovšek, Jessye Norman, Deborah Polaski, Thomas Quasthoff, Ildikó Raimondi, Peter Schreier, Andreas Schmidt, Petra-Maria Schnitzer, Peter Seiffert, Deon van der Walt and Iris Vermillion. He was the preferred accompanist with whom Christa Ludwig collaborated for a period of more than twelve years.
Prof. Spencer has appeared on numerous CD recordings with Quasthoff, Janowitz, Lipovšek, Polaski, Doris Soffel, Michael Volle as well as with Maria Venuti. His recordings with Cecilia Bartoli and Ludwig were received enthusiastically by the international press and further bestowed with numerous international prizes and honours. Concerts with these and other artists took place in some of the most important international venues.
In addition to his active international schedule of masterclasses, Prof. Spencer was appointed Professor of Song Interpretation at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in 1999, and in the same year became Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, London.
Future projects include a complete edition of Liszt songs with Juanita Lascarro, Janina Baechle, Ferdinand von Bothmer and Josef Wagner, as well as concerts with Anne Schwanewilms and Wolfgang Holzmair.
